The day after the wonderful leopard sighting when travelling from Tamboti to Satara we got up early and we were at the gate ready to go when it opened. The day before I’d jokingly asked for a male lion sighting as we were lucky enough to get a close up leopard sighting. We decided that we would take the H1-3 and turn left on the S100 and then turn right on the S41 and head back via the H6 and H1–3. We were the first car onto the S100 and decided to go to leisurely pace to see what we could see. Along the S100 we did not see much, there was the odd animal or two but nothing of note. We did have a hyena come out of the bushes but it disappeared before we were able to take any photos.

When we got to the S41 we turned right and shortly after getting onto the S41 we came across a male lion walking in the middle of the road. He was very relaxed and was more interested in marking his territory than us. We were with him for quite awhile without any other cars so we’re able to stop the car have him walk towards us, wait for you him to pass and then start the car again when he was a while away and drive past him and do it again. We did this two or three times and got some great footage of him walking towards us.

After while we were getting closer to the S100 and we could see quite a few cars turning left. Shortly after one car turned right and was surprised to see the male lion walking towards them. As the car arrived there were some wildebeest between our car and the other car and the male lion was walking straight to wards them. We sat there as the male lion attempted to stalk the wildebeest. He got pretty close to the wildebeest but it wasn’t a full blooded attend. Shortly after the attempt the male lion turned left prior to the S100 and disappeared into the bush.

More cars were arriving at this time and we decided that we had had such a terrific sighting that we would leave the lion to the other cars. We could no longer see him anyway. On the way back to Satara we came across a couple of hyenas fighting over a kill which is very entertaining but we were ready for breakfast. On the way back my wife couldn’t stop hassling me that two days in a row I had asked for a specific sighting and the bush had delivered. Needless to say the next drive (mid morning) the luck continued and our next morning drive was also incredible. Sometimes luck is on your side.
